There’s hardly a person in Ireland who hasn’t heard of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Such is the popularity of hurling and Gaelic football that almost every parish has its own club. It’s an important part of what it means to be Irish, and the games are now played around the globe. And yet, despite its iconic status, the story of the founder of the GAA remains largely untold.

Michael Cusack was born in Carron, County Clare in 1847 and died in 1906. A fascinating and complex personality, his passion for Gaelic games was matched only by his love of the unique and beautiful Burren limestone landscape where he was born and raised. Cusack was also the model for "The Citizen" in James Joyce's Ulysses.

Our project

Our project was conceived to celebrate the man and the association that he founded. The original homestead has been fully restored and a contemporary visitor centre developed nearby.

For anyone interested in the changing face of Irish life, the Michael Cusack Centre is a treasure chest of living history. Open April to September (Winter tours by appointment), it is a top tourist attraction and popular destination for school groups and sport enthusiasts.

Is beag duine in Éirinn nach bhfuil cloiste aige faoi Chumann Lúthchleas Gael. Tá an oiread sin éilimh ar na cluichí anois
go bhfuil club bunaithe i mbeagnach gach paróiste mórthimpeall na tíre. Is páirt lárnach dár n-oidhreacht mar Éireannaigh
iad na cluichí. Cé go bhfuil a hainm in airde anois ag an eagraíocht spóirt seo, níor insíodh scéal iomlán an bhunaitheora
go fóill.

Michéal Cíosóg ab ainm dó, agus mar a tharlaíonn sé, tá comóradh céad bliain a bháis á cheiliúradh i mbliana. Duine
suimiúil ar leith ba ea é, an paisean a léirigh sé do na cluichí Gaelacha ar chomhchéim leis an ngrá a bhí aige do
thírdhreach Bhoirne, áit rí-álainn nádúrtha inar rugadh agus tógadh é.

Leis an bhfear féin a cheiliúradh, chomh maith leis an gcumann a bhunaigh sé, a cuireadh an tionscadal seo ar bun. Tá a áitreabh dúchais, sa Charn i gCo. an Chláir, athchóirithe ar fad agus tá ionad cuairteora den scoth tógtha in aice láimhe.

Do dhuine ar bith ar suim leis na hathruithe a tháinig ar saol na hÉireann, is seoid staire é Ionad Uí Chíosóig. Beidh sé oscailte ó Aibreán go Meán Fómhair, agus níl dabht ach go bhfuil sé ar cheann de na háiteanna turasóireachta is tábhachtaí amach anseo, áit a mbeidh grúpaí scoile agus lucht leanta spóirt ag tarraingt air.
