THE CLARE HERITAGE & GENEALOGICAL CENTRE

The Professional Genealogy Research Service & award-winning Heritage Museum is housed in what was once St. Catherine's Church, which was built in 1718 by a first cousin of Queen Anne. The circumstances that moulded the character of the people over one hundred years ago are interpreted in an absorbing story.The centre houses the most comprehensive research material held in any one location to enable persons with Clare roots to trace their ancestry.

THE CLARE ARCHAEOLOGY CENTRE,

Built in 1480, the uppermost floors and staircase were badly damaged by the Cromwellians in 1651. Repaired and opened in 1986, the castle houses an extensive museum, an audiovisual presentation and various exhibitions. The archaeology/History Trail features 25 sites all within a few kilometres radius of the castle. A guide is available at the souvenir shop. Guided trail tours by prior arrangement.

Beautifully constructed old stone walls enclose the sheltered Vandeleur Walled Garden set among 420 acres of native woodland. The 'forgotten garden' of Kilrush House, dating back to the late 18th Century, has been fully restored, and is now a haven of peace & tranquillity.

The story of the Burern is excitingly capturees in 'A walk through time' multi-dimensional exhibition at the completely refurbished Burren Centre. Visitors get a comprehensive introduction to the geology, flora and fauna of the region, and an understanding of the history and effects of man on the unique landscape.

Doolin Pitch & Putt is an 18 hole links course which was established in 1995. It is located on the road to Doolin Pier just off the R479, 5mns from the village with a backdrop of The Cliffs of Moher, The Aran Islands and Doonagore Castle. Its a great way to spend an hour or two.

Oceanlife Dive Centre, Kilkee, is a PADI 5 Star Diving resort. The Centre offers PADI dive courses from Discover Scuba all the way to Assistant Instructor. This cave was formed by the glacial melt waters of an early ice age. The erosive power of the waters carved out an subterrainian river deep underneath Aillwee mountain. This river has subsided since the last ice age, leaving behind one of Ireland's most stunning caves.
